OUR MISSION

"Our church exists to use God's gifts and talents to mature as fruitful disciples of Jesus Christ, and to make disciples for the transformation of the world."

About FUMC

WHAT WE BELIEVE

The United Methodist Church welcomes people from every walk of life. Even though we all come from many different backgrounds and have different life experiences we know that there are few things that we all have in common. Some of these are listed here.

Jesus - Jesus is the Son of God, the child of the virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit, truly God and truly Man, who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven. He is eternal Savior and Mediator, who intercedes for us and by him all persons will be judged.

The Cross - The official United Methodist doctrine is that sin separated all persons from God. Jesus' death on the cross was an atoning sacrifice, making possible our forgiveness and reconciliation with God. To repent of sin and trust in Jesus Christ are the only requirements for one to receive that forgiveness and reconciliation made possible by Jesus' death.

The Bible - the Bible was inspired by God and contains all things necessary for salvation. When read under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Bible is our true rule and guide for faith and practice.

The Holy Spirit - The official United Methodist doctrine is that the Holy Spirit is of one substance with the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit convinces the world of sin, and leads persons to a response in faith to the gospel. The Holy Spirit is the Christian's primary teacher, comforter, and source of power.

Holy Communion - Holy Communion (or the Lord' s Supper) is a faithful remembrance of the suffering and death of Christ and a celebration of love within the Church. Those who in faith eat the broken bread and drink the blessed cup partake of the body and blood of Christ in a spiritual manner until He comes in glory.

Ministries

At FUMC, our ministries embody our core mission of demonstrating Christ's love through sincerity, openness, and respect, welcoming individuals of all ages to join and participate.

Children's Ministry

Just as Jesus did, we welcome children to the ministries of First United Methodist Church. At FUMC, children are an active and vital part of our church community. All children's activities relate to the vision of our church which includes growth in grace, discovering their gifts, and using them in ministry in the church and in the world, all for the glory of God.

Youth Ministry

The purpose of Youth Ministries is to empower youth as world-changing disciples of Jesus Christ and to nurture faith development.

Music Ministry

Our music ministry offers adults, youth, and children of all ages a chance to use and develop their many talents through singing and instrumental performance.

Food Pantry

"FOR I WAS HUNGRY AND YOU GAVE ME FOOD, I WAS THIRSTY AND YOU GAVE ME DRINK, I WAS A STRANGER AND YOU WELCOMED ME."
MATTHEW 25:35

FUMC is proud to support the Marion County Food Pantry. In fact, it was one of our church members that started this ministry years ago. Today our church has volunteers that work in the Food Pantry on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. We also give out vouchers for those that are in need on Tuesday mornings from 8:00-10:00 a.m. Contact the church if you would like to help with this very important ministry serving those in need.

XYZ

XYZ stands for Xtra Years of Zest! This ministry meets the first Wednesday of each month (August-May) at 9:00 a.m. in the Wesley Center. The main purpose is to keep senior citizens active while helping people in Marion County. This ministry is made up of people throughout Marion County. XYZ spends their time doing a variety of things such as making blankets, visit nursing homes, devotion, etc. Everyone that has the time is welcome to come and join us!

FIRST TIME HERE?

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Welcome! It is a real joy for us to meet newcomers and to tell you about all the good things God is doing in our church family. For over 130 years here at FUMC Columbia, it has been our mission to love God with everything. That means that no matter where you have come from and where you are on your spiritual journey, we want to come alongside to inspire, equip, and encourage you to live out a life that will bring glory to God and be a blessing to the world.

Here's all you need to know before you show up for your first service: Come as you are. Although our time will be taken up by singing, teaching, reading, and praying, you don't need any manual to figure out how to fit in. Jesus simply says: "Come to me" and we say the same. Just come as you are!
